- In the old days many houses in Banteer district were made of mud. The outside walls were lined up with stones, and the walls limewashed, as well as the chimney. All had small windows, mere holes in the walls in the poorer houses, open by day, and covered with plaited straw mats at night. The roofs were thatched with straw over which tar was poured. Houses near the bog were thatched with straw mixed with heath. The old people used to have a barrel permanently fixed in a house, to take the grain from the straw used in thatching. They beat the heads of the straw on the top of the barrel. The grain fell in, and the straw was not broken. The quantity needed for thatching was threshed in this way. A timber settle bed was kept in the kitchen, and used as a seat by day. One may be seen in almost every farmer's house in this parish. At night a bottle was procured, and filled with oil. A small round cotton wick was put into this. The wick was held in place at the mouth of the bottle, by means of a pin, or needle. It was then lighted and as the wick burned, the pin, or needle was moved to a lower position. It gave but very dull light, and continually flickered. Bog-deal splinters were also used. The fireplace was usually in the end wall. Many people gathered dry hard cow-dung(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
