   and burned it, as sticks or turf. It was used usually when baking, being placed on the cover of the bastible when red hot. It was locally called "Fabhaltháin". Maggie McCarthy's house at Knightfield, Banteer, had no chimney:- a hole in the roof at the gable end. The house was usually full of smoke, which went out the door, yet she lived to be very old. There was a "settle" in the kitchen, where she slept. The windows of this one-roomed house were very small, and though made of timber and glass, were permanently fixed, and merely admitted streaks of light. The walls were of mud, and it was roofed with oaten straw & heath. In some houses camp beds made of timber, and about six feet in length, were used. There was no wire spring, but straw was placed on the timber to take its place. Down on this straw, a tick of feathers was stretched. When the tick got old, the feathers were taken out, and sold to feather mongers. Fresh feathers were then put in. The straw was also renewed at will. One of these camp beds may be still seen at William Riordan's, Gouganes, Banteer
