In the eastern end of Spike Island the very old people used to say that smugglers gold was buried there and that a black man was slain on the spot in order that his spirit should guard the treasure. It was in 1850 or so that the convict prison was built there for Irish offenders Among the prisoners there was John Mitchel but he was only there a short time.
