   forces during the course of the Geraldine rebellion towards the end of the sixteenth century. After the attack had lasted some days, the garrison was hard pressed. Both the Earl and his wife were in the castle and the former fearing that the castle would fall decided to send Lady Desmond along this tunnel to the monastery so that she would have an opportunity of escaping. All went well until she emerged from the end of the tunnel at the monastery. She found to her surprise that the building was occupied by a party of the Queen's soldiers. They immediately made her a captive and put her cruelly to the sword.

   Another local story runs as follows:- Long ago when the Geraldines were living in Shanid castle they had a lot of treasures stored there. Once they were being attacked and the castle was being stormed. The leader of the Geraldines buried the treasure in the tunnel which
