- One night during the civil war of 1922 as Daniel King and James Ambrose and Thomas Kierby were coming from Newcastle West to their home in Ballykenny driving in a horse and trap they met with a few free State soldiers who called on them to halt. The men in the trap did not hear the command and they drove away. Then the soldiers raised their guns and fired on them. Daniel King and James Ambrose were shot dead but Tom Kierby escaped because he was sitting on the far side of the car.
A small iron cross on the roadside at Killeline now marks the spot where the fatal shooting took place. This story was told to me by my father who knew those three men well.- Bailitheoir
