- In Derry Island, near the Bridge of Portumna on the Tipperary side are the ruins of an old castle.
It was built by the English during the Cromwellian period in the year 1650. This castle was built to oppose Clanricarde in Co. Galway.
Ireton's Castle is quite a different style from that of the other castles in Lorrha Parish. It is triangular in shape and is covered with lovely ivy. Ireton who was Cromwell's son in law is supposed to have stopped here and to have given his name to the Castle.- Bailitheoir
