It is not rightly known why the distillery ceased to work but it is generally believed that the owner ran into debt and failed to carry on the work.

Hedge schools are said to have existed in this parish in the penal days because in those days parents were very anxious to have their children educated to keep the old traditional name "The island of Saints and Scholars" alive.
Mud houses were built by the hedges and in these hovels the "poor scholars", taught to the pupils what little knowledge they had. Reading, writing and arithmetic were the principal subjects(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
