   taught, and the teachers were paid every week by the pupils.
   One of these hedge schools is said to have existed on a farm owned by Mr Hawley, in the townland of Ballycapple. the teacher's name was Mr Gordon, and the pupils paid him a penny every Monday.
   Some of the well - to - do farmers kept a teacher in the house and during the winter months the neighbouring children came to the farmhouse for lessons. It is said that the pupils brought turf to the teacher, each bringing one or two sods under his arm every morning during the cold weather.
   On arriving in the parish the first step the teacher took was to have an advertisement posted up proclaiming his qualifications. On Sunday morning a crowd of peasants would be seen collected together reading the notice and soon after children were sent to school.
