The bridge shook beneath its weight and a huge dent was made in the central arch. The flood subsides about evening, but normal conditions were not restored for many days.
   When the flood had ceased and things became normal, it was noticed that the river had changed its course in various places. The bridge at Newport was then regarded as a considerable source of danger and anyone carrying a load, weighing more than a ton was warned by notice boards, which were displayed at both side of
