   a stick with a bladder tied to the end of it. His duty is to keep order. This he does by whacking all offenders with his weapon. The party is sometimes accompanied by (a piper or) a fiddler, (often by both), they are generally followed by a crowd of country boys and girls, whom the "ammadhawn" keeps at a respectful distance. Thus equipped and accompanied, they visit the houses of the gentry and strong farmers.
   The entertainment begins by the singing of the following verse;
   "The wren, the wren, the king of all birds,
   St. Stephen's day, was caught in the furze,
   Although he is little, his family's great,
   Rise up, lords and ladies and give us a treat"
   Then comes the dancing of merry jigs and reels. Then when they get refreshments, or a present of money wherewith to get them. off they go with three hearty cheers for the master and mistress of the house.
