- There are three forges in the village of Newport, one of these is situated in Cork Road. It is a one story building, with a slate roof, and the door of horse-shoe shape. There are two fireplaces within, and these are kept burning from early morning till late in the afternoon. There are three smiths, or sometimes more, working in the forge. The bellows is used for blowing the fire, it is made of timber and leather with an iron pipe. The owner of this forge is John O'Connell and the O'Connell family have worked at this trade for many years.
Among the many implements which the smith uses are a hammer, a tongs, a pincers, a rasp, a clippers, a clinch-knife, a stamp, a dog and a sledge. The hammer has various uses, but is used principally(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
