- There once lived a man in Grantstown named General Massey whom my grandfather worked with. He built Grantstown Castle which stands 600 feet high. He had large tracts of land and kept over 30 dairy cows on it. At that time there were no creameries in Ireland. The people used to make their own butter at home and send it to Cork because the butter merchants used to come to Cork and buy it there and send it to other countries. It was often my grandfather carried the butter there. There is a man living in Golden whose name is Dan Looby. He was a great jumper and a weight thrower. He won the Tipperary jumping championship four times in 1925, 1926, 1930, 1932. He also won the Co. Tipperary weight thrower championship three times in succession in 1927.1928,1929. He could jump 6ft 3" high.

- John J. Ryan formerly of Drumline was long distance champion of Ireland for several years. He won the four miles championship of Ireland in 19 minutes several times. He also won over ten miles beating the best English and French runners. He collapsed in England in a ten mile race a few yards from the winning post, when winning easily all for the want of training. This happened at Newcastle on Tyne, Ryan was a great man but had not time to train(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
