encamped here and from the heights of Tlachghta shot down the Plunketts of Rathmore.
At the foot of the hill stood a mud-walled thatched chapel where the inhabitants of Rathmore worshipped during the dark days of the penal code.
In 1317 A monastery - the Carmelite friary of Athboy - was founded here by William De Loundress. He made a grant to the friars of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel of that lot of land where this monastery was errected. All that remains of this religious house is a square tower, used at present as the belfry of the Protestant Church. The old foundation has been uprooted and a Protestant Church occupies the site.
In 1641. Athboy was a walled town including Fraine Castle.
In 1643 Owen Roe's troops came through Ballyboggan Lane and surrounded the town. The Garrison was in great terror - O'Neill struck with lightening rapidity and carried the day.
