when the horse saw the water he went over to it for a drink, and his driver fell from the top of the cart. The moaning of him was to be heard as the flood was taking him down the river. He was found below Dr. Gavin's garden. He was a fairly old man whose name was Stephen Tormey from Kells.
In the year 1839 a terrible wind arose which is called to this day the "Big Wind".
It came on all of a sudden and it lasted a whole night but it was gone in the morning. It stopped for about half an hour, at a time, and it was very calm in these intervals. A person could hold a candle out in it and it would not be blown out.
This calm did not last for long and soon everywhere was shaking and slates off houses were flying about. It was the biggest wind we have had since in this district.
Another one came about twenty years ago. Mr. Farrell of Moynalty House had a hay shed in the stewart's yard and the wind came and blew it into the field beside the yard. That house and yard is now owned by Mr. Thistle. Some trees were blown down, but that was all the damage caused.
