    the people could not get their cattle, and most of their houses were destroyed.
    Some years later there came an awful drought and people could not get any water and they were worse off because all the wells of the places went dry.
    They had to buy a bucket of water for two-pence. They were going miles to try and get any at all, and some people made a lot of money by carting water and selling it.
    A boy in school, named Wilfred Clarke got the following story about a lake near his house for me.
    A long time ago a lot of men were working in a deep sandpit at Maprath near Loughan, Kells. Each of them had a cart and horse bringing out the sand and they used to leave their horses in the sand pit while they were working.
    One day they went home for their dinner leaving their horses behind them.
    When they were away a dreadful shower of rain came and a spring burst out in the sandpit. It must have been a very big spring, for when the men came back to
