A cure that was believed in for a woman was to keep her tongue quiet every day for two or three days, but they would suffer the toothache rather than keep quiet.
Another disease that people suffered from was Mumps. The way it was cured was, an old woman would bring the sufferer to the pig-sty and take him by the hand and bring him round the pig-sty and say, "Hugne hugne muckne leckne, I leave this on you, pig".
A diesease known in olden times was called "Carly Con". It was something like rheumatic pains. The cure they had for those nasty pains was, they used to go to a man that kept a public house and they purchased a pint of the real "Old mountain dew" that never saw water. They went then to the Chemist and the got a half oz of gumdueackin, half oz of turkey-rhubarb, half oz of nitre, half oz of creamoftarter, and a half oz of sulphur. Then they used to mix all these things together and they called it "The pain-killer".
Another disease called the jaundice used to be cured as follows: There is a tree growing called the jandy tree, the leaves of which are grownd with insects called slaters or (wood lice). The person who has the jaundice drinks some of this mixture in water for nine mornings and after the nineth morning they are expected to be better.
