- (continued from previous page)years of age. Butter is made twice each week in Summer and once in Winter. My mother generally churns. Sometimes I churn. Churning takes about a half an hour. The churning is done by hand. When the butter is made you get it hard to twist the handle. Water is poured in when the butter is not gathering quickly. We lift out the butter with the patters and put it into a butter basin. This basin is made of wood. Then we put salt on it and bruise the water out of it. Then we make it into pound packets. The buttermilk is used for making bread.
