- Long ago when St. Patrick lived on earth, he came to a poor woman one night and asked her for lodging. The woman said she could not keep him because she had no beds or no candles. St. Patrick said that it would be alright.
St. Patrick went out and cut a bundle of rushes and brought them into the house and put them in a heap on the floor and he slept on them that night.
During the night he made candles and these candles were callled "rush candles". They were commonly used by the people in former years.
The people used to pick bundles of rushed and peel the skin of them and roll the inside of them in candle grease and use them as candles.- Bailitheoir
