- When the pleebeens (plovers, lapwings) come to the fields along the roads the old people always say that we may expect very severe weather. This winter, 1938, the plovers came almost to the roadside in the fields near Ballymahon and we had all kinds of severe weather. There was extremely heavy rain succeeded by storms and these were followed by frost and snow. Before our school (Ballymahon Boys') closed for the Xmas holidays on 22nd December 1938, I saw the sea-gulls come in small flocks to the very school door as if they were begging for bread. During the holidays when heavy snow fell I saw them fly to the Teacher's door and pick the pieces of bread that his children threw to them.
