- In olden times bread was made from oats grown locally. The flour was not made locally.
There are people still alive who remember querns been used to grind the oats or wheat and some of these are to be seen in houses yet.
Among the kinds of bread made were oat-meal cake, boxty bread, potato-cake and dumplings.
The oat-meal bread was made from oat-meal mixed with salt and water and baked on a griddle before the fire.
Boxty-bread was made of raw potatoes, grated, mixed with salt and flour, and baked on a pan.
Potato-cake was made from boiled potatoes bruised, mixed with salt, flour, and baked on a pan.
