- The original parish church of Columcille was
situated in Inish Mór Ireland and was called
"teampuill Columcille. Its graveyard dating back to
the early days of christianity wa called Reilig
Columcille. It contains the ashes of Martyrs, Monks, Nuns, Hermits and Chieftains. The inscriptions on some of the headstones are written in Gaelic and date back to the 17th century. Numerous cures were effected in old times, by praying on the grave known as the martyrs grave and every ill that human nature is heir to has been cured time and again by praying on this grave or rubbing clay from the grave to the effected limb or
member of the body. The skulls of the Martyrs
were exhumed and placed with those of the monks and nuns in the little niche inside the tower of St. Columcille's church. Many cures were wrought by drinking water, or applying water from the skulls to the affected part.
