- There were all classes of churns long ago. There were dash churns and German patent with beaters in side of them. The dash churns were very handy. The churn that I saw the sides of it were round in shape. The lid was round with a hole in the middle and there was one handle on the lid. There was a piece of muslin all round the lid of the churn to keep the butter milk from coming up. The German churns were like a barrell and it used to be(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
