    In his bosom burned a feeling - it was wondrous wild and strange -
    On the mission of his Saviour through those far-off lands to range,
    As the Autumn sun diffuses light on plain and mountain side,
    So his life would breathe the sunlight of Christ's Spirit far and wide.

    Year on year was gathering o'er him, Summers came and Summers fled,
    And they only found him closer to his Master's Service wed;
    And the chieftains clustered round him, and the war clans broke their swords,
    For the battle clouds were scattered at the music of his words.

    Oh! they sing the fame of Fergus, son of Roy, whose silver string
    In the halls of pround Emania won the hearts of thane and King,
    And they tell of Glorious Niall, and his Knights so fierce and tall,
    But the Saviour's humble servant in (?) his cell surpassed them all.
