- The houses long ago were mostly built of mud walls and thatched roofs. There were two apartments in them, a kitchen and a room. There was one small window in them and sometimes no window at all. There were slates on the very rich people's houses. They got them at the slate quarries. The people used to sleep in the kitchen when they would not have a room. Some people used to make the fire on the middle of the floor without any grate. They had no chimney only a hole in the roof. Furze was used as firing. They had plain timber doors. They had a half door to keep out the pigs and hens. Rushes got from the bogs were use as lights at night-time.
