- About the year 1898 a severe snow storm raged from the west. It was so heavy it continued for nearly three days. The wind did not blow very hard therefore the snow did not form into deep drifts, still there was an average depth of about eight feet.
Two old women, Mary Connolly and Anne Bowell lived in an old cabin opposite Dernakesh church. The cabin was completely covered. My father and his brothers, Thomas and Patrick, spent two days cutting a track to see if they were safe. When they came to the house it was in complete darkness. The first thing Mary did was to get her clay pipe and have a good smoke.- Bailitheoir
