- About one hundred years ago there were two hedge schools in a district known as Collagree near Feakle. One teacher was Mrs. Comer and the other was a man sarcastically known as Gamster.
They were little mud cabins. The teachers were paid by the parents. The fee charged was a penny per week and more if the people could afford it. The subjects taught were Irish, Arithmetic and writing. Books were provided by the priest while they used the wings of geese for pens.
