When the friars were in Straid in Cromwell's time one of his soldiers followed one of the friars and he ran from Straid to the brink of Lough Cullen and when he got there he saw no chance of making an escape and he swam the lake to the other side and go away. But the soldier did not follow him any further because he knew what would happen to him if he did he would get drowned.
