- Every blacksmith owns a forge. The hearth is risen about two feet higher than the floor. The bellows is made of leather and worked by a spar of wood. The anvil rests on a block of wood in the middle of the floor. It is used for shaping horse shoes and things the smith makes. He has a hammer for driving nails to keep the shoes on the horses hoofs. A pincers for taking off old shoes. A rasp for filing the nails in the horses hoofs. A sledge for bending red iron on the anvil. And a knife for pearing horses hoofs. A blacksmith shoes wheels near a well. First he heats the tyre and when it is red he puts it on the wheel and cools it with water.
