  1. A wealthy man once lived in Crossmolina, a small town west of Ballina. This man visited Ballina every day. His servant boy drove him in on a side car. Every day on his way home he was seen to light a white clay pipe at a certain part of the road. When he had it kindled, he would throw the pipe inside the ditch. Soon there was a heap of clay pipes at the spot. The man is now dead, but many of his relatives still live in Crossmolina. Still it is difficult to find out the reason for his peculiar behaviour. Some say he left the pipe for a very old deceased friend of his, who was fond of the pipe. Others say that he was once frightened at that spot on the road, and that he offered a pipe to the fairies as a bribe.
