  1. The hedge sparrow is known among the old people of the Parish of Donaghmoyne, Co. Monaghan as -

    "The Garawan Sharkey"

'Garavan' is probably a variant of Gealban Sharkey - SEARCAIGH ?

I am unable to trace any meaning for Searcaigh - it may have something to do with 'Searc' - Does the hedge sparrow display any notable peculiarities during the mating season?
