- In my home district few of the old crafts remain. The only few of the real old useful crafts which are still practised locally are starchmaking in a few farm houses. Old men still make baskets for washing potatoes in and big ones to contain eggs for market.
Cobbling in some houses is common in here still for rough working shoes. Soap is also made for home use. In farm houses where bacon is cured the lard is preserved and also some fat or suet is purchased from a local butcher and is rendered and a quanity of caustic soda added and the substance is boiled together until it sets and is allowed to harden and is used for washing and cleaning.
There is still an old cooper named John Fodery in this district. He makes churns, barrels and butts for milk and lids to cover them, as mice are fond of cream, and in careful(continues on next page)- Collector
