  1. Father Tinney told me that in old times there was a hedge school held near Carn. He said his father was taught reading writing and arithmetic at the hedge-school. In Summer the scholars and master hid a stream that went dry. In Winter they hid about farm houses. When the soldiers came the master ran to a secret hiding-place in the mountain. Often he did not return for weeks because the soldiers were about. Sometimes the pupils had narrow escapes when they were helping the master to escape.
