    George Sandes was a very cruel agent. He prosecuted the people for many small matters. He was very strict and he did not allow the people to keep dogs. Many tenants were prosecuted for keeping greyhounds. The people hated him very much and he always had a bodyguard when he was gathering the rents. If the people improved their land Sandes made their rents higher. He died in the Square Listowel about fifty years ago. Newtownsandes is called after him.
