    Stephen Hynes (53 years) Castlegar, Galway told me how candles were made. He saw his grandmother making them when he was young.
    Candle-making
    Many years ago candle-making was very common throughout Ireland. This is how candles were made.
    First they used to pull some rushes and take the skin off them except a small bit to keep the stalk strong. They used to dip this in oil and leave it in a cool place to get very hard. When it was very hard they (to) put it in a candle stick and then it was ready for lighting. It would keep lighting for half an hour. They sold those for twelve a penny. They had to make
