- (continued from previous page)Immediately above the thickest part of the bulb, there was a peg or step inserted. When making the hole the foot was placed on the step, to assist the hands in driving the bulb into the soil to make the hole. Then a "split" or set was dropped into the hole as soon as the "steeveen" was withdrawn. This work was continued the whole day. In the evening the mould around the holes was beaten in over the "splits" with the "steeveen", spades, or a heavy stick, by the men and women who were "setting" or by boys and girls, who might or might not be able to do the "setting". Sometimes now-a-days children "gugger" in the "splits", that is they throw in a "split" into each hole the "setter" makes, as he withdraws the "steeveen".
The people after the failure of the potato crop had to exist as best they could on Indian Meal, cabbage and turnips. Yes, the Government relief reached this district, but it(continues on next page)- Collector
