- Long ago shops in the country were not common. People had to go to the nearest town to buy goods. Sometimes people gave eggs, butter, or other articles in exchange for goods.
Some strange words are used when buying and selling, as, change, means small money, boot equals profit, tick, means credit, luck- signifies good fortune, cante, etc. Often goods or animals are exchanged for things of the same value. Gipsies and tinkers go around selling articles.- Collector
