The time of the famine the landlords in the district formed a union and hired the poor people for small wages making roads and other works.
The following story relates an incident of the famine.
A road was making at Glenageenty, Catsleisland, and all the poor people were working there. One evening as two men were coming home from work - they sat down by the roadside, tired and hungry. The following morning they were found dead by the roadside, covered with snow.
