  1. 7th October 1938.
    Long ago in Ireland people only had three meals a day - breakfast, dinner and supper. Sometimes people only ate twice a day when the days were short. People worked two or three hours at least before having breakfast.
    Each meal consisted of potatoes and sour milk or sometimes meal gruel. Poor people had no milk to drink. Potatoes were eaten at every meal as long as the supply lasted.
    When the supply of potatoes was exhausted the people used to find other ways of supplying themselves with food. They used to make yellow meal bread and also oatmeal bread, wet with a little water, and a pinch of salt added. They used to carry the oats to the nearest mill to be ground and the mill as perhaps eleven or twelve miles away. Then they used
