to bring home the oatmeal on their backs. People seldom ate meat but sometimes they used to kill a cow. Three or four families would join together. Often people put down some oatmeal to boil with the meat. They drank the soup for their breakfast. They also ate some vegetables such as turnips and cabbage.
Certain kinds of food were eaten on special occasions. On Easter Sunday people used to eat eggs. They often got a quarter of veal for the occasion. At Christmas people used to get a firkin of flour from Cork. About forty-fifty years ago tea was first used in this district. The vessels used long ago were timber mugs and timber piggins.
