- My mother remembers when mackerel and herring melts were taken out and melted in an old saucepan and the oil then put into a scallop shell or saucer. The pitch was made into small portions about 6 inches long and placed horizontally in the oil. My mother who was born in the eighties says she can smell the oil yet. But the older people were as accustomed to it as the modern maid is to her perfume. The pitch was then soaked in the oil. The end was lit from a coal or a bit of brosna out of the fire and when the light got dull, it was snuffed which made it bright once again. The grandmother or(continues on next page)
