  1. The old people used to make candles in this way. Get a bull-rush, peel it and roll it up in wool. Boil fat meat dip the rush in it and hang it up to dry.
Transcribed by a member of our volunteer transcription project.
  2. Rags were made into the shape of candles. Then a dish of grease was got and the rags were dipped in the grease. Then they were left out in the air to dry. When they were dry they were brought in and put in an iron candle-stick. The iron candle-stick had a hole in the centre of it, and a clasp on the outside. When the candle was lighted the clasp was pulled up and the candle was put in the hole. Then the clasp was pulled down and the candle was held. These candles were called "snoboges".
