  1. Dunlough Bay has also a historical connection. In 1796 one of the ships of the Hoche Expedition, which Wolfe Tone procured from the French Government, was wrecked near Dunlough Bay, off the Mizen Head. There were 1100 men on board, but only five survived. They succeeded in reaching Barley Cove strand; two miles east of Dunlough Bay in safety. This even is recorded in the following poem entitled the
