  1. There was a hedge-school in this town long ago. The hedge-school was where the office of Gerald Maguire, Esq. B.L. now stands. Previous to Mr. Maguire taking this office - it was used as a Presbytery by the priests. In this hedge-school Mr. Kenny taught. He taught the Classics and was a wonderful Latin scholar. He later on taught in his native place-Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon. His grandson now resides in Louisburgh, Westport.
There was an old school in Cloonkeeaun, Claremorris, about 65 years ago. it was held in a country house. Mr. King taught in it. The children had to pay sixpence per month to go to it. They had no copies or pencils. They had a blackboard on which the teacher wrote. The pupils wrote on slates. They learned sums reading and writing.

There was once a hedge-school near Brickens. It was in a kind of a cave with some covering on it. The teacher used to put a book on the pupil's head and walk around the school to see that they walked straight.
