  1. In Black '47 the people of this district were in a pitiful plight as a result of the failure of the potato crop. The supply of corn in the district would have been sufficient to feed the people for some time. But it had to be handed over to the landlords as payments for land rents. Many of the people died from hunger and many would have died were it not for the assistance that came from the government at the time. The assistance consisted of porridge which was made in Carrigart, under the Supervision of a local Committee. A noggin of porridge was handed out to each person every day, this assistance continued from the 1st of October until July of the following year. In addition to the porridge many of the people used nettles, cabbage and every other green food of an eatable nature. Shell fish, sea grass (dulce) and rabbits were also used as food.
