    by it was imported to several countries mostly for white-washing owing to its great whiteness.
    Barrel making was carried on in a place called Downings Bay. for several years. This was a very beneficial industry and the district as Downing's then was one of the leading Fish-Curing Stations in Ireland. A great export trade in fish from this part was carried on and several people found employment in the making of barrels. that were used for holding fish. This industry is now discontinued.

  2. Marriages take place about Shrove-tide and Whit-suntide. in our district.
    The month of June is considered an unlucky month for marriages.
    Match-making is carried on in our district. Nearly every girl is expected to have money. Sometimes stock and goods are given instead of a dowry.
    A miss Osborne of Ramelton was married in her own home by special license. This happened with the past seventeen years.
    There is a wedding feast held and usually there is a dance at night with fiddlers
