In olden times the people carried out customs that no fairies nor witches could harm them.

    (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)
Fairies have been known to take babies and leave others in their places that would always remain small.
Another custom was to go to the river and catch a fish, burn its liver, and as long as you kept the ashes no fairies could harm you.

My grandmother who was Mrs Lucas who formerly lived at a place outside St Johnston called the Green.
One day she started to churn and she churned all day and no butter came on the milk. At last she gave up hopes.
Then a neighbour came in and said that the butter was sold long ago, but to go to the byre and change the door to the other side, for a spell was put on the milk, and the butter was able to be taken and sold.
They did so and no more butter was missing.
