    Loud and long his swagger cockle
    With echo reassuring;
    But Ned heeds not that idle prattle -
    His plan is all alluring.
    While yet ten yards from arched pier
    With hushed and baited breath
    He whispers in his horse's ear :-
    "Now for life or death".
    From coup to mane the noble steed
    Quivered as if belied
    And twitched and swayed like lovely reed
    That howling gusts defied.
    Shot up her spine and leg and knee
    Her ears rise up defiant.
    With chomping bit and snapple free
    Upon as on pivot pliant,
    And o'er that archêd gate she swung
    And swiftly passed from view.
    And the morning air with muskets rung:
    "Hurrah! my bonnie Lishnoo"
