    and courageously he swam towards land, now and again eating a bit of raw bacon. After three days and three nights swimming he landed on the shore of Ireland but not on any part Galway. As he swam to the shore he saw a light at a short distance. The light was in a house and in it dwelt a girl. As his clothes were tattered and torn he took shelter at the face of a stack of turf. In the early part of the night this girl went out for turf and she saw the poor man almost naked. He told her not to fear that he was a man parted from his wife. He was thrown out in the ocean and had swum to shore. She brought him in and got him some clothes. He remained with her for a month. The girl noticed he was handy and clever.
