In the same district, after sunset, nobody could ever trespass or touch anything on the same lands ___ without somebody appearing and preventing him. One man had cut trees secretly and thought he could steal them by night, but to his surprise, as he reached there, a tall man stood over him, and looked at him. He stooped down when the man forbade him touch it.
The man went home, and came back early in the morning when he got it without any disturbance.
Another man set rabbit snares and was going down about 10 p.m. when the tall man with a silk hat walked down towards him on Kidnaminsha Crossroads , looked at him and walked on.
Mat recognised the figure and went home for the night.
