    She said that if ever the milk failed, her mother who is now dead, used to put a little drop of boiling water into the churn. When the butter would be made her mother used to draw the sign of the cross on the dairy door to prevent the butter from being taken, with a little piece of butter.
    Sometimes when people were churning they could not get butter. Then they believed that the fairies had taken the butter, so the woman of the house would redden the sock of an old plough and leave it at the churn of butter so that whoeve went near the butter would be burned.
    Long ago it was the custom to skim the well nearest to the house on May 1st for an abundance
